Welcome to the main page of the World Dissonance Project! (Updated 12/19/07)
This is a project to catalog the types of cognitive dissonance that can be theoretically anticipated and empirically observed. If you are familiar with the theory of cognitive dissonance, you might say, "What do you mean types of cognitive dissonance?". On the other hand, if you are not familiar with the theory, you might be musing "So what?". All in good time, my friend... Interestingly enough, the theory of cognitive dissonance has barely been explored. Cognitive dissonance is a much larger phenomenon than was previously understood. There is nothing flawed with Festinger's (1957) conception, but there have been misunderstandings that have led to much of the current trainwreck that is this vast literature.
